Graham: Building a 100kg Deadlift!

“In the 3 months that I’ve been working with Martin I was able to smash my deadlift objective, increase my own confidence within the gym and improve my own self well-being”.

I started training Graham at the end of September 2022. From day one his sole focus was on achieving his 100kg on the deadlift. He had previously noted that he was a keen cyclist and has recently joined a gym a couple of months prior. So, he was relatively new to weightlifting, similar to a large number of people I work with daily. But what was really refreshing to me was how focussed and dialled in he was to obtain his 100kg deadlift.

So, on day one we got to work with a movement assessment and to test out his deadlift mechanics and view where he was at so we could gauge the process required to reach his goal.

It took 11 weeks.

11 weeks of building. 11 weeks of relentlessly pursuing his goal. 11 weeks of consistent hard work and progressive overload. When we finally completed his retest session before Christmas, not only did he manage 100kg. He pushed passed this and ended up with 120kg!

I couldn’t fault his passion and enthusiasm towards reaching this milestone. Check out what Graham had to say about this journey:

“Martin had already trained two of my family members and they both had glowing reports noting his capability to understand your objectives and to really push you out of your comfort zone, which gave me the incentive to get started. Prior to starting, I didn’t really have any frustrations just a lack of knowledge of how to structure a training programme to reach my goals. The initial key objective that I had set myself was to be able to deadlift 100kg”.

“In the 3 months that I’ve been working with Martin I was able to smash my deadlift objective, increase my own confidence within the gym and improve my own self well-being”.

“There were 2 things that I enjoyed about the programme. Firstly, although probably not seeing any physical improvements I was able to look back through the previous sessions to see the gains that I had made every couple of weeks. Secondly, I liked the finishers that he added at the end of each session to spice things up”.

My goal as a coach is to educate, motivate and empower. Educate you on what you need to do to achieve your goals. Motivate you to put things into practice to continually work towards them and empower you to get where you want to be. Most of the goals that you are chasing do not come easy. They take sacrifice, consistency, and patience. So make sure that when you do reach them, you celebrate!
