The Starting Line: A Diagnosis and a Choice
In September 2025, Ann had never stepped foot in a gym, let alone lifted weights. Facing severe arthritis in her hips and a future joint-replacement surgery, she found herself at a crossroads. To ensure her upcoming surgery and post-operative recovery would be successful, Ann knew she needed a complete lifestyle overhaul. But starting from scratch in a gym environment can be incredibly daunting, especially when living with chronic pain.
Beyond the physical limitations of her arthritis, Ann carried a deep, quiet anxiety. After suffering a severe fall in the past (and struggling to get back up) she lived with a constant fear of falling again. This fear restricted her movement and kept her from doing simple things many take for granted.
The Connection: More Than Just a Gym
When Ann joined our Beginner Weightlifting Club, we didnβt just hand her a generic workout plan. As a non-profit dedicated to community health, we met Ann exactly where she was.
Our coaches designed a tailored approach that balanced strength building with functional safety. Alongside traditional lifting, we focused on a vital, real-world skill: learning how to fall safely and get back up. By breaking down the mechanics of getting to and from the floor in a safe, controlled environment, we slowly chipped away at the anxiety that had held Ann captive for years.
The Breakthrough: Strength, Confidence, and Becoming a Champion
By teaching her the techniques and building her core and lower-body strength, the floor was no longer an obstacle. Exercises like glute bridges, sit-ups, and floor presses (previously entirely inaccessible to her) became a regular part of her routine.
By June 2026, less than a year after starting, Annβs hard work yielded spectacular results:
- Goal Achieved: She hit her target weight goal after losing an incredible amount of weight.
- Pre-Op Ready: She successfully passed her first pre-op assessment, with her surgery date now on the horizon.
- Overcoming Fear: She can now safely and comfortably get down to the floor and back up entirely on her own.
Her relentless work ethic, positive attitude, and willingness to face her fears head-on didn’t just inspire the coaches – it inspired the whole gym. In May 2026, Ann was officially crowned our Weightlifting Club Champion!
“Before finding this club, the thought of being on the floor was terrifying because of my history with falls. Now, I have the strength and the technique to get up safely. I feel prepared for my surgery, but more importantly, I feel like I’ve gotten my life back.” β Ann, 57
The Ripple Effect
Annβs upcoming surgery is no longer a looming dark cloud, but a milestone she is fully prepared to conquer. Because of the strength, mobility, and confidence she built at our gym, her post-operative recovery time is set to be significantly shorter and smoother. Ann walked into our gym looking to prepare for surgery; she walks out everyday as a capable, confident weightlifter ready to tackle whatever life throws at her.
